How does this Hot Dog Chili Recipe fit into our family history?

When the Patierno family migrated from Southern Italy, they settled in Northern New Jersey and discovered the area was a hotbed for hot dog establishments serving great hot dog chili sauce. They loved the unique taste. Mama decided to develop their own similar Greek-inspired recipe to make at home to enjoy at family gatherings.

A Brief History of the “Greek-Inspired” Chili Dog

From: The Atlanta Constitution | April 13, 1913

In the recent years prior to 1913, over 500,000 Greeks had migrated to then USA. Greeks have long had a dish called “Makaronia Me Kima”, translated to macaroni with meat sauce – think something like Mama’s Pasta with Bolognese Sauce, only a bit spicier.

It’s believed that at some point – likely before this 1913 article, one of the Greek proprietors married his saltsa kima meat sauce with the hot dog and a new dish, the “Chili Dog” was born!

Today, the “Chili Dog” survives and is known by many names, including:

  • Chili Dog
  • Coney Dog
  • Michigan Coney – Detroit
  • Texas Tommie
  • Hot Wiener
  • Texas Wiener / Weiner – New Jersey – Ohio

This Texas Wiener became a staple and widely popular all over the US, including: New Jersey, Ohio, Detroit and many other states. The name was most likely adopted because Chili was so popular in Texas with it’s Latin influences from Mexico and South America at the time.
